We have been telling our clients for years to ignore most phone calls from people purporting to be from the IRS or Social Security Administration. Our mantra has always been that the IRS never calls concerning individual taxes (they might for business owners that owe payroll taxes) and that the only way they contact taxpayers is through the mail.
Well, now the scammers are getting smart and they are sending letters.
This is a sample of a letter we became aware of. While much of it may look authentic, there are a lot of problems with it indicating it is a fake.
So, be careful. If you get a letter that states you have a balance owed, send it to us. We can call the IRS on your behalf or pull an electronic transcript to be sure.
